Textbook pages 41–42

Question 1

Match the instrument with the weather element it measures.

Steps only

Hygrometer—humidity; anemometer—wind; barometer—pressure; thermometer—temperature; rain gauge—precipitation.

Answer

1–d, 2–c, 3–b, 4–e, 5–a.

Question 2

Jyotsna is deciding what clothes to pack for a school trip to Mumbai in June. The forecast predicts 29°C and 84% humidity. What would you advise her?

Steps only

Pack light, breathable clothes; high humidity makes sweat evaporate slowly. Carry rain protection and water.

Answer

Dress for warm, humid and possibly rainy weather.

Question 3

A group of students is setting up a rain gauge. Choose a site from the school garden, terrace, open ground with an elevated platform, compound wall or laboratory verandah. Explain your choice.

Steps only

Choose open ground with a level platform, away from roofs, walls and trees.

Answer

This lets rain enter directly and gives a fair measurement.

Question 4

Use the Jammu and Kashmir weather chart to write a short script reporting conditions on the date shown. Cover temperature range, maximum and minimum temperatures, humidity, precipitation and other available details.

Steps only

Compare the station extremes, then mention one or two humidity and rain/snow readings.

Answer

On 1 February 2024, Gulmarg was coldest (maximum −2.6°C, minimum −7.6°C) and Muzaffarabad was warmest (8.5°C, 5.6°C). Qazigund and Gulmarg recorded heavy rain and snowfall; humidity varied by station and time.
